Why become a church member?

Adapted from Church Membership by Jonathan Leeman

  1. Jesus supported membership
Jesus specified local congregations as the place where Christians connect and care for one another (Matthew 16:18, 18:17).
  2. The apostles practiced membership
They worshipped in, ministered to, and were commissioned by their local church (Acts 13:1-3, 15:30-35).
  3. Scripture assumes membership
The New Testament affirms that Christians belong to local congregations.Christian life is church life (1 Corinthians 1:2, Revelations 2-3).
  4. Membership defines your involvement
Membership is a personal decision that moves from attending and watching to belonging and participating (Acts 2:41-47).
  5. Membership declares you a follower of Jesus
    It's a public affirmation that you are a citizen of Christ's kingdom (2 John 1:7-11Philippians 3:20).
  6. Membership gives you the place to practice your God-given identity
Together we are God's family, Christ's body, and the temple of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 6:10, Ephesians 1:22-23, 2 Corinthians 6:16).
  7. Membership clarifies your calling
It calls you to love, serve, protect, and encourage specific people as a member of the congregation (Ephesians 4:11-32).
  8. Membership enables dedicated guidance
It links you to leaders committed to your wellbeing, shepherds charged by God to tend the flock under their care by guiding you in the Way of Jesus (Hebrews 13:17, 1 Peter 5:1-3, Acts 18:25-26).
  9. Membership opens leadership opportunities in the church
At The Village Churchonly members can participate in congregational decisions such as new pastors, leaders, and budgets. Also, only members can serve as elders and deacons (Acts 6:3).
  10. Membership is how God proclaims Jesus to the world
When we love one another, we proclaim we're his disciples (John 13:34-35). A church who lives like this proclaims the gospel in a way that inviteall to follow Jesus for life (Matthew 5:14-16).
